Motorcycle Buying Guide: How to Choose Your First Motorcycle

Here at KD Motorcycles we get asked this question all the time, choosing your first motorcycle is an exhilarating experience that requires careful consideration and research. As exciting as the process is, it can also be daunting if you are not familiar with the different types and specifications. This guide will walk you through the steps to finding the best motorcycle for your needs and preferences.

Understanding Different Types of Motorcycles

Before you purchase your first motorcycle, it is crucial to understand the different types available and which style best aligns with your intended use.

Sport Bikes

These motorcycles are designed for speed and performance, boasting powerful engines and enhanced braking systems. However, they may not be the best choice for beginners due to their high-speed capabilities and aggressive riding position. not the mention the insurance costs, we found with new riders this tends to be high.

Cruisers

Cruisers models are perfect for relaxed rides. They usually have a lower seat height, making them more accessible for beginner riders. Their substantial weight might be challenging at first, but their stability can be reassuring.

Naked or Standard Bikes

Standard bikes, often referred to as naked bikes, offer a more upright sitting position and a balanced design. These are ideal for beginners due to their manageable power and versatile nature.

Adventure or Dual-Sport Bikes

For those looking for versatility, adventure bikes offer the flexibility to ride both on roads and off-road trails. They are usually taller, providing great visibility, but might not suit shorter riders.

Assess Your Needs and Skill Level

Ponder on what you need the motorcycle for. Is it for daily commuting, weekend cruising, or off-road adventures? Your choice should align with your intended use and your current riding skills.

Set a Budget

Determining how much you are willing to spend can narrow down your choices significantly. Don’t forget to include costs for gear, insurance, and maintenance in your budget. Also look to see what finance deals are on new motorcycles, sometimes buying new is cheaper than used using finance to fund your purchase.

Consider Engine Size and Power

Beginners are often advised to start with a motorcycle with a smaller engine (250cc - 500cc). Such bikes tend to be lighter, less powerful, and more forgiving, making them easier to handle at lower speeds.

Test Ride Multiple Models

Once you’ve narrowed your choices, head to our dealership to test ride different models. Pay attention to how the bike feels, handles, and fits your body size. Comfort is crucial in your bike selection.

Check for Safety Features

Your first bike should have essential safety features like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). Safety is paramount, so don’t settle for less.

Used vs. New Motorcycles

Decide whether to buy a new or used motorcycle. A used bike can be less expensive and a good choice for a first bike, but ensure you check its history and condition carefully. Again look to see what finance deals are on new motorcycles, sometimes buying new is cheaper than used using finance to fund your purchase.

Conclusion: Buying your first motorcycle is a significant milestone. Take your time to research, test, and evaluate your options to make an informed decision. With the right approach, you'll find the perfect bike that brings you joy and matches your lifestyle.
